A feature of all modern human societies is the wearing of clothing, a category encompassing a wide variety of materials that cover the body. The primary purpose of clothing is functional, as a protection from the elements. Clothes also enhance safety during hazardous activities such as hiking and cooking, by providing a barrier between the skin and the environment. Further, clothes provide a hygienic barrier, keeping toxins away from the body and limiting the transmission of germs.

Clothing performs important social and cultural functions. A uniform, for example, may identify civil authority figures, such as police and military personnel, or it may identify team, group or political affiliations. In many societies, norms about clothing reflect standards of modesty, religion, gender, and social status. Clothing may also function as a form of adornment and an expression of personal taste or style.

Throughout history, many materials have been used for clothes. Materials have ranged from leather and furs, to weaved and woven materials, to elaborate and exotic natural and synthetic fabrics. Recent scientific research estimates that humans have been wearing clothing for as long as 650,000 years. Others claim that clothing probably did not originate until the Neolithic Age (the "New Stone Age").

Articles carried rather than worn (such as purses), worn on a single part of the body and easily removed (scarves), worn purely for adornment (jewellery), or those that serve a function other than protection (eyeglasses), are normally considered accessories rather than clothing.

How much clothing does a teen and her mom need to last several years, maybe more?
Q. How much of each kind of clothing do we need? Other details: It gets cold and can snow and ice up bad in the winters here. The summers can get really hot and sticky. The springs can get really windy and rainy. We both need around the house clothing, she rips through clothing fast (especialy stains up school pants at the knees), she needs plain dressy clothing for school.

A. Well, I would suggest that to calculate this amount, then "she" needs to treat her clothes with better respect. Clothes are expensive! Make them last, smart one. Anyways, I would assume about 7 shirts (Sweaters and tshirts), 5 pants (jeans and stretches), 1 pair of sweats, 2 shoes (exercise runners, regular shoes), 7 undies, 3 bras, 7 socks, 1 jacket, 1 rain jacket, 2 hoodies, and anything else you can think of. You don't need a lot if you're smart and treat the clothes well. Just do laundry on Saturdays, and use clothing preserving detergents. Also, avoid throwing them in the dryer...that wears them down fast

Clothing is material used to cover parts of the human body for protection against the environment, for comfort and body modesty, and as personal decoration ("fashion"), often reflecting religious, cultural, and social customs. Clothes are individual articles of clothing (although the term is always used in plural form).
