How do I retrieve Yaho Chat archives mistakenly deleted?
Q. Another uses deleted my Yahoo Chat archives. I need some of them for legal purposes. How do I get them back?

A. Yahoo Messenger stores them as .dat files on your harddrive, usually in "C\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Pr ofiles". To read any old messages, you normally click on a user's ID to read them, but after vivisiting several forums I found this handy little freeware tool: which lets you open your messenger .dat files without entering your YIM account. Note: Yahoo does not keep backups of those files on their server, so please check if you still can find it on C drive or in the trash bin of your harddrive. If not, you could try a system restore prior to the date of the accidental deletion.

Where are chat archives stored for the web version of Messenger?
Q. In my earlier days of using Yahoo Messenger, I used the web version most of the time and it would store my chat records online for me. The question was about deleting messages, which to me, indicates the need to get rid of certain messages while still maintaining the bulk of the old messages and certainly keeping any forthcoming Data, I'd imagine. In any case: To view your messages, click Contacts on the Messenger Toolbar and scroll to Archive. Click there and look for your messages by person's name and date of message. Once you find the message you can open it by clicking on it. Also, in the Archive Toolbar, you can click Message and see your options for the message you just opened, including copying it. To delete a message, right-click, highlight and click delete.

A. On a PC hold down the CTRL key to click multiple messages and they delete. On an Apple the Command or Apple shape key does the same thing. If they are in a row, you can drag a highlight box around them and drag them into the trash.
